"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind"
Romans 12:2

As Christians we are to live by the Spirit, surrendering our lives every moment of every day according to the leading of the Holy Spirit.  We do that by, first, saying "no" to the constant cravings of our sinful flesh, and saying "yes" to the Spirit's rule in our hearts and minds.  And second, by making a drastic change in our thinking process.

God commands us to "not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom.12:2).  To "conform" conveys the idea of putting on a mask so as to appear to those around you as something you're not.  When a Christian conforms to the pattern of this world, they adjust their behavior to imitate the traits or features that are characteristic of the unsaved around them.Christians need to live transformed lives (Romans 12:2) - Chapter 8 of Extreme Mind Makeover

Now why would any Christian ever want to do that?  Let's face it; it's hard at times to be a Christian.  Whether in the workplace, at school, in the neighborhood, or even around family, the unsaved can be harsh and cruel.  Satan wants you to believe that you need to act like the world to be able to fit into the world.  It's a whole lot easier to put on a mask when you're around the unsaved, acting like they do, talking like they do, laughing at the things they laugh at, all so that you don't come under attack for your beliefs.

God strictly commands us not to conform to the pattern of this world.  Not to do the things the world does.  When you choose to do the things the unsaved do - to act the way they act, to talk the way they talk - you are doing so for the self-centered purpose of gaining man's approval.  Paul asks the question, "Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God?  Or am I trying to please men?"  He then goes on to declare, "If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ" (Gal. 1:10).  Our aim, as we live as followers of Christ in this world, must be to please God, not man (2 Cor.5:9-11; cp. Acts 5:29).  God knows what your real motivations are anyway; He "tests our hearts" (1 Thess. 2:4).  Remember, "The LORD does not look at the things man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" (1 Sam. 16:7).  As God looks at your heart, what does He see?

Because He can see the heart, and His purpose in our lives is to refine us to be more and more like Christ, He convicts us and prompts us to choose those things that bring Him glory.  As we've already established, those things that bring Him glory, also bring Him - and us - delight, as well as a sense of peace, joy, hope, and confidnce in Him.  All in all, it is for our good that He sees our heart, that He tests it, because His desire for us is always and only for our good.  Why would we want to conform to something that isn't pursuing our good?

Dear Christian friend, don't conform to the pattern of this world.  Don't put on a mask and pretend to be what you're not just so that you can "enjoy" life - which is really not enjoyable at all, especially if you've tasted the goodness of God.  We are to "be imitators of God, as dearly loved" (Eph. 5:1).  To imitate God is to allow the Holy Spirit to live through you.

As a child of God who is loved dearly, you should desire to also be obedient and to "not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.  But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy'" (1 Pet. 1:14-16).

The bottom line is that you are a chiild of God and you belong to Him ...
