"Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like
a wise man who built his house on the rock
"
Matthew 7:24

When you build a home you must start with a foundation.  That only makes sense.  Right?  After all, what happens to the building if you don't have a foundation or if you build upon a weak one?  It may stand for a brief period of time, but as soon as a strong wind comes along - WHAM!  Down it goes.

The purpose of a foundation is to support the entire structure that is built upon it.  If you don't build on a foundation, or if you build on a foundation that is in shifting soil, the structure will begin to sink into the ground.  Floors will sag, walls will crack and the whole house will eventually crumble.  The ground you are building on must also be able to support the structure or it won't matter what kind of foundation you build upon.

In Matthew 7, Jesus speaks about two types of builders.  He said:How to Build Your Life on the Right Foundation - Extreme Mind Makeover

"Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  The rain came down, the streams rose and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."   - Matthew 7:24-27

Building on a Solid Foundation

Which kind of home would you want to live in, one that is built on a weak foundation or one built on a solid one?  Just as you need a solid foundation in order to build a solid structure, so you need to build your godly life on a spiritually solid foundation.  If you expect to stay standing in the midst of the storms of life that constantly bombard you on every front, you need to be planted firmly on a foundation that will not fail - one that runs deep into solid rock.

The primary goal of every Christian is to know God and live a godly life that brings honor and glory to Him in everything we say and do, especially in the midst of the storms of life.  That is the structure we are "building."  It needs to be built upon a solid, spiritual foundation.

The question then is: What is the foundation that we should be building our godly lives upon?  The answer is God's Word!  The Bible is living, powerful, active, gives great understanding and wisdom, in fact, will make you wiser than all your teachers, is a perfect guide for your life, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of your heart.  The Bible has significant impact on those who seek out its truth.  Not only does it tell of God's redeeming love, it is full of His promises, His guidelines, and His message of hope.  This is our solid foundation!  This is what we must build our godly life upon if we expect to stand firm in the storms of life.

Take a look again at Jesus' story of the two builders in Matthew 7.  The wise man is the one who built his house upon the solid foundation of a rock.  But look carefully, who does Jesus say the wise man is?  He is the one who hears God's Word and puts it into practice in his life.  Now compare that with the foolish man who also hears God's Word, but instead of obeying it chooses to ignore it.  To build upon the solid foundation of God's Word requires two steps: hearing it and obeying it.

In Matthew 7:24 Jesus says that the wise builder "hears" His words.  When you are "hearing," you are considering carefully, giving your full attention to what is being said, and then thinking about how it applies to you.  God says that a wise man or woman will give their full attention to what God is saying in His Word, considering carefully what they are reading, and seeking to understand how it applies.  But that alone does not make us wise.  Something else is required ...
